So, Shoko Festival is around the corner. At the Festival, aside from the music and dancing there will be synapse snapping conversations and workshops on tech, citizen journalism and new media on the 25th and 26th of September. The lineup for this will be released soon.
One of the most interesting aspects of this will be the Hub Awards in association with the Wallace Global Fund and Zimbabwe Alliance. Candidates can start on their ideas from now until the opening of Shoko Festival 2014. There are four categories, and 1,000 USD cash prizes for each that will include mentoring on the project over the course of the next year.
Once candidates have an idea they would like to submit for consideration in the Awards they can email a link or basic description of their project idea and category they are interested in to shokohub@gmail.com – the best ideas under the various categories will then be selected to be presented at Shoko Festival 2014 at the opening of the Hub Unconference at 9am on the 25th of September at the Shoko Festival site (Alex Sports Club). Once the Awards have been presented by the hopefuls they will be able to bounce ideas off and be asked questions by leading practitioners in the field. The Award Ceremony will take place will the following day at 1630.
Any young bright sparks need to get to work for the chance to win $1,000! The categories are:
Women Rising Award – Award for advocating for women’s rights and voices using new media and technology
Speak Truth to Power Award – Award for new media solutions & platforms encouraging accountability & dialogue (with local authorities, local council, university authorities, central government and so forth)
Your Voice Award – Award for best up-and-coming individual, citizen journalism blog
