“As things now stand, WFP will no longer be able to continue providing assistance as the resources have been fully utilised,” said WFP.
Despite spirited collaboration between government and the humanitarian community, the flooding in Masvingo exposed poor disaster preparedness and response. Government has forcibly relocated the displaced villagers to a farm in the same province despite protests that the new plots they have been allocated are too small.
They were promised four hectares per household but that has been cut to one hectare each. The victims have accused government of reneging on earlier promises to compensate them for relocation, which was supposed to have taken place before the dam was built. They now face starvation as planting crops can only take place with the onset of the rainy season in November.
