Gorden Moyo, the Renewal Team’s International Relations Committee chairperson, told the diplomats that besides aiming at leadership change in the party, they were keen to resuscitate the falling economy, society and various state institutions.
“We are building a vibrant opposition which would be presented as an alternative government.
“The Renewal Team is not for the narrow renewal of the MDC but believes in the renewal of the economy, society and our state institutions which are the ideals of the liberation struggle,” Moyo said, pointing out that his party would work on issues of high levels of poverty, corruption, unemployment and lack of implementation of the constitution.
Moyo said Zimbabwe had no reason to be poor given its rich mineral resources, strong agricultural potential and the great climatic conditions.
According to Moyo, the MDC Renewal Team would soon hold its policy conference ahead of the national congress next year.
To win the coming 2018 elections, Moyo said, the Renewal Team was in consultations with various political parties to form a grand coalition.
Guided by Pan Africanism and ‘Ubuntu’, Moyo highlighted that the Renewal Team was in solidarity with Nigeria and South Africa, in reflection of the recent Nigeria tragedy which claimed some 100 lives following the collapse of a church building.
The former GNU State Enterprises Minister said they were in solidarity with nations grappling with challenges such as the Al Shabab, Boko Haram, the terrorists in Kenya and outbreaks such as Ebola among other challenges.
The Renewal Team indicated that though it would be ready for the 2018 elections, it will not participate in the electoral process if agreed reforms are not implemented.
SADC and the African Union were urged to ensure that irregularities observed during the 2013 elections are effectively dealt with before the next harmonised polls.
State institutions including the security sector were reminded of their obligation to respect the country’s Constitution and refrain from meddling in political affairs.
