The controversial resolution means that politburo members Dzikamai Mavhaire, Josaya Hungwe, Otilia Maluleke, Nelson Mawema and Kudakwashe Bhasikiti will automatically become central committee members – from where President Robert Mugabe will pick his politburo members.
Some war veterans and party youths have vowed to reverse the resolution, arguing that the five should be subjected to elections like anyone else. It also emerged that all but one of the current politburo members from Masvingo were from the Mujuru faction.
“The position which the provincial executive has taken is undemocratic because as youths we also want to be politburo members,” said Claudius Ndoro, spokesman for the youths.
War veterans have also weighed in describing the resolution as “dictatorship of the highest order”.
“We want to know who did the provincial executive consult when it came up with the resolution,” asked a spokesman for the vets who declined to be named for fear of victimisation.
“We now want new faces in the politburo and central committee especially youths and war veterans,” he said.
Zanu (PF) Masvingo provincial spokesman Godard Dunira said that the move was taken in order to respect leaders. “As a sign of respect to our leadership the provincial executive resolved that the five will not be contested and we have no apologies to make because we did that after considering that these people were appointed by President Mugabe hence they are our leaders,” he said
