The two seasoned players have been in fine form lately, most notably in the 1-0 loss to Dynamos last week, when some neutrals felt the asbestos miners deserved at least a point.
Makonese, 37, was resolute in the heart of defence, while Nenzou also turned back the years with a defiant display in central midfield. Tapera prayed for more of the same for a side now desperate to avoid joining the likes of Chiredzi and Bantu Rovers in the agonising trip back to Division One football.
“Nenzou and Makonese have been influential for us over the last few matches and if they can continue like that, we can have a better chance of surviving,” said the coach early this week.
“Makonese has worked very hard to regain his fitness and self-belief, after he was rejected by several clubs during the off-season. His application in training has been impressive. Nenzou, too, has been exemplary and the two are providing the much-needed leadership to the youngsters in the team. Zvenyika is now the team captain and this has motivated him well.”
Shabanie at least still have a fighting chance in what is turning out to be a fierce battle to avoid the relegation. They lie third from bottom but their haul of 27 points is only two less than Chapungu, who occupy 10th place. They have managed one victory and four draws in their last nine matches.
