Speaking to The Zimbabwean after an emotional address to the party’s district structures at Mkoba Hall at the weekend, Chibaya said:
“It is now clear for all to see that Zanu (PF) is heading towards a dead end. They have made a historic booting out nine of their provincial leaders, baying for the blood of their second person in command (VP Joice Mujuru) and virtually chasing away any of their own members who are against the persistent rule of Mugabe. This is fertile ground for MDC-T to see the success of its long fight for a new Zimbabwe.
“What is now needed is for each and every one of our supporters to revive the spirit which we had in 1999 when we coined the ‘Mugabe must go’ mantra. At that time nobody dreamt of positions that are now dividing us. What simply united us and gave us energy to toil in the streets and fill stadiums during rallies was that spirit. It is therefore that overwhelming spirit we need to rediscover now in order to fully realise the advantage brought by the infighting in Zanu (PF).”
The former deputy national MDC-T youth chairperson said it was very likely that general elections would be held before 2018.
“It is now highly likely that very soon they will climb down to Parliament and sack all MPs aligned to Mujuru – as they have done with provincial chairpersons, war veterans and others. That would then lead to by-elections and probably general polls that we should take advantage of. We can do this, but only if we all rediscover the spirit of 1999,” said Chibaya.
His remarks come as Zanu (PF) is seriously torn-apart by factions battling to succeed Mugabe. Recent casualties of the purge include nine provincial chairpersons and war veterans’ leader Jabulani Sibanda. .
His remarks come as Zanu (PF) is seriously torn-apart as factions battling to succeed Mugabe. Recent casualties of the purge include nine provincial chairpersons and war veterans leader Jabulani Sibanda. Overtures are still being made to boot out Labour Minister Nicholas Goche and the party’s secretary for administration Didymus Mutasa on farcical allegations that they plotted to assassinate Mugabe using a hired snipers from Russia and South Africa.
Chibaya said MDC-T supporters must put aside internal party differences and rally behind the agenda of change.
"There are some people whom we formed the party with but are no longer with us because we differed along the way. Let’s court all of them and explain to them that we now need each other more than ever in order to achieve our agenda of change and stop the suffering of the ordinary people caused by Zanu (PF)'s failed regime. I talked to Tendai Biti, former MDC-T secretary-general who defected to form his own Renewal Team party, recently and said come back home. That is the way to go now," he said.
