It is a bad time to be a cow right now, as it is a week when, as always, several head of cattle will be slaughtered. With each of the 10 provinces having been given a target of raising $150,000, add to that several donations of livestock, plus the $1 million raised at the dinner hosted by Vice President Joice Mujuru, this year’s event is set to cost millions of dollars.
While the end of the congress, for ordinary citizens, means a return to the long-postponed bread and butter issues, for some party bigwigs, this will be a time of great anxiety.
Going forward, a further purge is likely. Mugabe will, in all probability, be looking at his security chiefs – asking why it was not they who unearthed the “assassination plot” rather than journalists. Anyone aspiring to life presidency will be aware of the importance of having loyal and vigilant henchmen. Ministers who were implicated in the plot to oust Mugabe – Mavhaire, Goche, Mutasa, Bhasikiti – will no doubt be looking for alternative employment.
