Zimbabwe’s parastatals have been struggling mainly due to corruption, a development that has seen workers at these firms going for several months without getting pay.

This is however despite the fact that senior management at these parastatals are pocketing hefty salaries.

In his state of the economy address at the Sixth Zanu (PF) National People’s Congress, Finance Minister, Patrick Chinamasa said that it was imperative for government to know what has been going on in these parastatals.

“One of the challenges that we face is the reform of the public service sector and in 2015, we are earmarking to give attention to parastatals which have an impact on our economy. Treasury has allocated money for detailed audits so that we know what has been going on in these companies,” said Chinamasa.

He said that Zimbabwe’s dilapidated road infrastructure needed to be revived as well to aid efforts at economic growth.

“We need to maintain our position as the hub of the region and we can only that if we maintain our roads so that the movement of people and goods will be smoother,” said Chinamasa.

He expressed confidence that the recently introduced bond coins will go a long way in reducing prices of goods.

“This small change is to bring some prices down as we all know that in the shops, people ended up buying sweets which they did not want because of lack of change. I urge delegates to support this initiative which will go a long way in stabilizing prices,” said Chinamasa.
