ZSP: Zims to miss out on travel

A number of Zimbabwean Special Dispensation beneficiaries are set to miss out on their December travels this year, despite South Africa having cleared some of them.

Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba late last month said ZSP applicants would be able to go home and return, even between the expiry of the old permits and issuing of the new ones. But he did not say anything about those who have not physically submitted their documents, who apparently cannot travel home during the festive season, as all DZP permits, including those originally set to expire next year, will now expire at the end of this month.

Many other permit applicants were given appointment dates around the Christmas and New Year holidays. With the traffic volumes at the border during this time of the year, very few would like to take the risk of travelling to and from Zimbabwe before their appointment dates.

“I have been given an appointment on December 24, so I am definitely not going home for Christmas this year, although I had made all preparations for it,” said Nomalungelo Moyo.

A Home Affairs officer said those given dates after the festive season would be able to travel because their applications are already captured. “All they need to do is carry their valid passports with permits and the online application form to show the officials at the border, even if they have not made the physical submission of documents. Only those booked for appointments during the festive season can remain behind,” said the officer, who requested not to be named as she was not speaking in an official capacity.

No official comment from the department of Home Affairs had been obtained at the time of going to print.
