The Masvingo senatorial seat is held by former Energy minister Dzikamai Mavhaire while Kudakwashe Bhasikiti is the current provincial affairs minister – both linked to Mujuru.

Former Masvingo rural district council boss Clemence Makwarimba is believed to have started campaigning for the senate seat. He lost to Mavhaire during party primary elections ahead of the 2013 elections.

He denied that he has started campaigning for the post saying that as he was the losing candidate in the 2013 elections he would just grab the post once Mavhaire is dismissed.

Former provincial Chairman Lovemore Matuke and Gutu senator Shuvai Mahofa are both eyeing the provincial affairs minister’s post.

“The provincial affairs minister’s post is filled by the president and if he feels I am the right candidate I will just take it,” said Mahofa.

“Matuke and Mahofa are dark horses to take over from Bhasikiti if Mugabe relieves him of his duties,” said a top inside source. “They have both started canvassing for support,” said the source.

More heads are expected to roll when President Robert Mugabe returns from his official leave, including deputy Minister of Agriculture responsible for cropping, Davies Marapira.
