She showered praises to all opposition leaders from the province whom she described as intelligent political leaders. Though she did not mention them by name, her remarks were directed at the late national hero Edgar Tekere, founding member of the Zimbabwe Unity Movement, Mavambo/Kusile/Dawn leader Simba Makoni, MDC-T president Morgan Tsvangirai and ex-deputy premier Arthur Mutambara (MDC).
Mutambara rose to stardom after he was called from America to lead MDC – a breakaway movement from the main MDC-T. Tekere and Makoni broke away from Zanu (PF) to form their own respective parties while Tsvangirai heads the most dominant opposition party.
These opposition leaders have caused President Robert Mugabe sleepless nights in the on-going battle to rule Zimbabwe. “Manicaland has the most educated people and brightest brains, if you look at what has been happening politically. We have all the leadership qualities because all of the opposition parties, except for ZAPU, all have leaders who come from this province,” said Chimene.
Her comments could ruffle some feathers in Zanu (PF) considering the current political turmoil. Chimene, a war veteran and former Central Intelligence Operative, might have some explaining to do. It remains to be seen whether she will survive this political hurdle when several party members have either been suspended or expelled through “votes of no confidence” over trivial charges.
Party upstarts and heavyweights have all fallen by the wayside as the two factions battled it for political ascendancy in a post-Mugabe era.
