For most of 2014 and early 2015, Mugabe hardly addressed the nation on the economy, choosing to focus on faction fights within Zanu (PF) and castigating his foes.
“Mugabe is seized with his own survival in Zanu (PF). It doesn’t seem to be occurring to him that the major issue he should address is the economy,” said respected economist John Robertson. “Everything has been on hold since the build-up to the Zanu (PF) congress. We are in a very serious situation and the CEO of the country does not care about it.”
He lamented the absence of updates on government revenue since November last year saying “It seems not much has been collected”.
Staff at state universities went for Christmas without salaries and are yet to receive their bonuses, while government is struggling to fund key projects and investors are waiting for clarity regarding the indigenisation law.
