Zimbabwe gets WBC recognition

The World Boxing Council has registered the Zimbabwe National Boxing Control Board for 2015, making the Southern African country eligible to host WBC world titles.

Zimbabwe National Boxing Control Board Vice-President, Lorraine Muringi, received the certification on behalf of the Zimbabwean board when she attended the World Boxing Council convention in the USA recently.

Zimbabwe has strong ties with the WBC, but not with other international boxing bodies that include the World Boxing Association and the International Boxing Federation.

“We have met all the requirements for registration with the WBC for this year. We are happy to be part of the WBC family,” said Muringi. The country has a WBC international boxing welterweight champion in the form of Charles Manyuchi.

The Zimbabwe National Boxing Board of Control has launched a crusade to try and revive the sport, which has been going through a period of gradual decline. Once Africa’s flag bearer in international boxing, Zimbabwe no longer has an African champion nor do they have a Zone Six title-holder, as the sport continues to sink.

Although Manyuchi was born in Zvishavane, he is regarded as Zambian by the international sports community, as he fights in Lusaka.
