Following a recent FIFA ban on the Zimbabwe senior national soccer team from the 2018 World Cup, Chawira said all sporting disciplines faced a bleak future should Langa fail to intervene.
“Our country seems to be heading towards a sad future in terms of everything relating to sports,” said Chawira. “When you look at soccer, athletics, cricket, hockey, rugby and tennis, you realise that there has been no progress for some time despite the abundance of talent we have and that needs serious intervention by the government.
“We need the minister of sport to visit communities in all the provinces and set up structures that will promote every sporting discipline from the grassroots. We have many retired sportspersons that are ready to work with the government in such an initiative.”
Chawira said there were many sporting facilities that had become desolate due to lack of utilisation and neglect. “We have to go back to the drawing board and identify capable administrators who will map the way forward for the country.” he said.
Hailing from Checheche growth point in Chipinge South, Chawira and his wife Daisy Bhasera are the brains behind the successful Chawira Sports Academy, which started as a talent identification organisation in 1999 and later grew to become a source of employment for a number of school leavers in the area.
The academy produced a number of stars, who include former Zimbabwe national soccer team striker Phillip Marufu, Freddy Manjoro, Eddie Mlambo, Iden Khumbula and Nomatter Munkuli.
