Chesterfield now sit sixth on the standings with 60 points from 40 games, three above Bradford City who have a game in hand. Friday’s win was Chesterfield’s third on the spin, consolidating their status as the form team in League One with six rounds of matches still to play.
And the impressive Darikwa, who was born in England to Zimbabwean parents, has started in each of the team’s 40 matches, completing 37 of them. After some experimentation in midfield, Darikwa has reverted to the right-back position for much of the current campaign.
A promotion into the English Championship for Chesterfield would be a huge boost for Darikwa, who harbours ambitions to play in Premiership and was at one stage reported to have attracted the interest of English giants Manchester United, Everton and Liverpool.
Darikwa has made no secret of his desire to turn out for Zimbabwe, who would do with a right-back of his calibre. The 23-year-old has proven his defensive capabilities this season, but he is also technically gifted enough to play in midfield, from where he made quite an impact two seasons ago.
The Championship promotion play-offs will involve the four teams finishing from 3rd to 6th on the standings to decide the team which joins the top two for promotion into the second tier of English football, the Championship.
