The application was filed before High Court judge Justice Mwayera after the police failed to respond to a letter written by his lawyers demanding the return of the recorder. Justice Mwayera gave the police up to 24 August 2016 to complete their investigations before the matter is heard again by the High Court.
Mahove’s application follows a similar one filed by freelance journalist Tony Manyangadze on 11 August 2016 seeking an order compelling the police to return his camera which they confiscated when he was covering the same demonstrations in Harare on 3 August 2016.
High Court judge Justice Priscilla Chigumba on 15 August 2016 gave the police up to 19 August 2016 to locate or make a sworn statement on the whereabouts of Manyangadze’s camera.
Mahove and Manyangadze are being represented by lawyers drawn from MISA-Zimbabwe’s Media Lawyers Network.
