Chinese express interest in CSC

HARARE  Chinese and Korean businessmen have expressed interest in Zimbabwes struggling beef industry parastatal  the Cold Storage Company Ltd (CSC). A spokeswoman for the company was reported in the press last week saying the Chinese had met with marketing director Isaiah Machingura, but refused

to divulge details. The company has been hard hit by the collapse of the agricultural industry in and was forced to suspend exports to the lucrative European Union after an outbreak of foot and mouth disease. Since the beginning of the disastrous land resettlement programme the CSC has failed to meet its EU beef quote of 9,100 tonnes, worth more than US$38 million annually. Last year the government rescued the CSC by injecting Z$10 billion to settle its outstanding debts, that had ballooned to over Z$12 billion, and to finance its restocking schemes.  Own Correspondent
