MDC congress recommends constitutional change

HARARE - The Movement for Democratic Change's (MDC) Harare province on Saturday unanimously recommended that the party draw up a new constitution that cannot be abused to suit the needs of a selected few. Morgan Femai, who was re-elected unopposed as provincial chairman said a new constitution for t

he party must clearly spell out the duties of officials elected to the hierarchy of the party. ‘The senate fiasco exposed the weaknesses of the party’s constitution. At the height of the crisis, even junior members of the party were making policy statements to the media. In the end we ended up having contrasting views, people from the same party,’ he said. In a way, said Femai, the senate fiasco exposed the loopholes in the constitution that some individuals allegedly wanted to use to gain control of the party unconstitutionally. Meanwhile, the MDC rebels will be appealing to the Supreme Court to overturn a High Court decision that confirmed Morgan Tsvangirai as President of the MDC. High Court judge Yunus Omerjee last week dismissed an urgent application by the rebel faction group seeking to remove Tsvangirai as party leader.
