MDC rebels suspended

BY OWN CORRESPONDENT HARARE - The National Disciplinary Committee of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), which met at the weekend, has suspended the 'Senate rebels'- Gibson Sibanda, Welshman Ncube, Gift Chimanikire, Fletcher Dulini and Gertrude Stevenson. Dr Tichaona Mudzingwa, acting chair

man, said the rebels had indicated that they would appear before the committee but then made an about turn and did not turn up to defend themselves.

The committee sentenced them as follows:

Welshman Ncube and Gift Chimanikire – suspended with immediate effect for two years from their posts and from holding any party position except being ordinary card carrying members. Of the two years, one year is suspended for good behaviour consistent with the code of conduct enshrined in the constitution.

Fletcher Dulini Ncube and Gertrude Stevenson – suspended with immediate effect for one year from their posts and from holding party positions. Of this one year six months is suspended on condition of good behavior consistent with the code of conduct enshrined in the constitution. The two remain ordinary card carrying members.

Deputy President Gibson Sibanda – suspended from performing all the duties of the Vice President as provided for in the Constitution with effect from December 17 2005 until the next MDC National People’s Congress scheduled for 2006. The Deputy President shall however retain his title without the duties associated with the position. The Deputy President is free to appear at the National Congress and put his case against this suspension. The National Congress will decide on his fate.
