Farmers want policeman jailed

HARARE - Police in Masvingo have repeatedly ignored High Court orders to return equipment they illegally seized from white farmers in the area and have either auctioned or are still holding on to some of the equipment, according to papers filed at court this week by the farmers. In their High Court

application filed recently, seven farmers want the court to order the imprisonment of officer in charge of police in Masvingo, one Assistant Commissioner Ndanga, for contempt of court. Both Ndanga and the government chief legal adviser, Attorney General Sobuza Gula-Ndebele, could not reached for comment. Ndanga late last year ordered her officers to raid the following farms and seize all movable property – Bateleurs Peak, Chiredzi Ranching Company, Daniel Jacobus Theron, Dromore Farm, Anthony Roy Miller, Fantaisie Farm and Mapanza farm. The law still requires the government to pay for equipment, although it can seize land for free. Ndanga and her officers have however ignored court instruction to return the equipment saying they have no means to bring it back to the farms. They have also allegedly gone ahead and auctioned some of the equipment to black farmers resettled on former white farms around Masvingo. – ZimOnline
