Cattle herds decimated

cattleHARARE - About 4 000 cattle have died from tick-borne diseases in the Mtawatawa area of Mashonaland Central as a result of a serious shortage of dipping chemicals. Zimbabwe's national cattle herd has been seriously depleted by the on-going farm disruptions, a shortage of skilled veterinary workers a

nd lack of foreign exchange to import vital chemicals. The herd has dwindled from 5 million to 2 million since 2000. The Reserve Bank recently released US$100,000 to the Veterinary Department o buy livestock medicines. But this has come too late to save many animals. Other provinces have been hit by sporadic outbreaks of anthrax, which have still not been brought under control. – Own correspondent
