Chefs behind gold smuggling – Gono

HARARE - Zimbabwe's chefs (a euphemism for the ruling elite) were behind most the country's gold smuggling, according to the governor of the Reserve Bank, Gideon Gono. He told diplomats last week that the Zimbabwean Police were now working with hired Israeli intelligence experts to curb the lucrativ

e trade, which is suspected to have cost the country US$160 million last year. Deliveries to Fidelity Printers, the sole, official buyer of gold in the country were down by 36% on the previous year. Gono says the government is aware of the side-marketing and smuggling that is taking place. – Own correspondent
