Mugabe weeps at Sally’s graveside

HARARE - Zimbabwe's strong man, Robert Mugabe, last Friday wept uncontrollably as he laid a wreath at Heroes Acre for his late wife Sally, who died in 1992 from kidney problems. The soon-to-be 82-year-old was consoled by Sally's sister Patricia Bekele, who had led a delegation of Sally's relatives f

rom Ghana to Zimbabwe for the occasion. In a sorrowful graveside eulogy, Mugabe recalled the night before his wife’s death. “I visited her in hospital and she took my hand and told me that she loved me very much. I said I love you too,” he said, according to witnesses. He also related how the two had met and later had a son who died as a baby after contracting malaria. “May I this morning, when we are joined together in remembering the departure of my dear wife, express to all relatives and friends my profound gratitude,” he said. Meanwhile, unconfirmed reports have been received that Mugabe’s second marriage, to his former secretary Grace (41), with whom he has three children, is on the rocks following allegations of infidelity. – Own correspondent
