Hold up in Hitschman trial

HARARE - The trial of Michael Hitschman, the registered arm dealer accused of plotting to assassinate Mugabe, failed to start on Monday as scheduled, because his lawyer only received indictment papers late last week.

Hitschman has been in custody since February, despite several attempts to s

ecure bail. Family members say his health has suffered enormously. For several weeks he was denied medical attention, despite The six other men arrested with him, including MDC legislator Giles Mutseyekwa were released shortly after their arrest. A warrant of arrest for MDC Treasurer, Roy Bennett, was also issued – forcing Bennett to flee to South Africa.

Hitschman has erroneously been described in the local and international press as a soldier under the Rhodesian government – in fact he was a reservist in the Zimbabwe Republic Police. – Staff reporter
