MDC to contest mayoral elections

HARARE – MDC President Morgan Tsvangirai has said his party will press ahead with plans to call mass anti-government demonstrations but did not give out a timetable for the protests.

He told the press last week that the objective of the planned mass protests was in fact not to “

;overthrow Mugabe” but was for Zimbabweans to exercise their “democratic right to express their disgruntlement over misrule”.

Tsvangirai, who at the March congress of the MDC said the party had lost faith in elections because the government always rigged them, said his party would continue to participate in certain elections for strategic reasons.
The Tsvangirai-led MDC which recently won a parliamentary by-election in Harare’s Budiriro constituency is set to contest mayoral elections in the cities of Chitungwiza and Kadoma.

The opposition party is expected to win in Chitungwiza although Mugabe’s ruling party is expected to retain the Kadoma mayorship. – ZimOnline
