Police torture NCA members
HARARE -The NCA is deeply concerned at the barbaric treatment by the police of its members who spent more than four days in police cells in Mutare and Harare last week.
"The police behaved as if human rights do not exist and subjected our members

to inhumane and brutally treatment. In Mutare where our remaining 10 members were released on Z$500 000 bail, one of the members is battling for his life after he was assaulted by the police to reveal who was their leader. We have since instructed our lawyers to sue the police,” said NCA spokesman Madock Chivasa.
In Harare, 128 NCA members were released on free bail on Saturday. They had been denied food while in custody. One of them, Evidence John, collapsed from hunger.”We were denied access to her to take her to a private doctor after the police took her to Parirenyatwa Hospital and she could not be treated as doctors were on strike,” fumed Chivasa.
“We will be in the streets soon to demonstrate specifically against the brutality of the police. After that we resume our quest for a democratic constitution,” he added.

Beer price hiked by 35%
HARARE -The bottle-store price of beer rose by at least 35 percent last weekend, Zimbabwe’s main beer manufacturer Delta Corporation announced, immediately drawing howls of protest from already hard-pressed consumers.
A 350ml bottle of Castle, Black Label and Lion lagers now costs Z$200 000, up from $150 000, while a 750ml bottle of the same brands has shot to a shocking $400 000, up from $270 000.The recently introduced sorghum-based lager beer, Eagle, colloquially known as”Jatropha”because of its inferior quality, has also risen to $300 000 for a quart up from $170 000.
Zimbabwe’s premier lagers, Pilsner, Zambezi, Bohlingers and Zambezi Lite are now going for $300 000 for a pint. The cost of drinking at fancier places such as nightclubs, hotels and sports diners is much heavier now with a pint selling for an average $600 000.
Prominent drinking outlets dotted across Harare such as Sports Diner, Keg and Maiden and Tipperary’s are now selling a pint of beer for anything between $400 000 and $700 000. Delta corporate affairs executive George Mutendadzamera said the price was pushed up by soaring input costs in the manufacture of beer, driven mainly by expensive imports. – CAJ News

CIO beat man over squirrel
MASVINGO -A Zimbabwean man got more than he bargained for when he was severely assaulted by state security agents after he attempted to hand over a squirrel to Vice-President Joyce Mujuru during a rally at Sipambi business centre in Masvingo last week.
The man who appeared to be in a trance, was knocked to the ground by Mujuru’s heavily built bodyguards after he surged towards the platform during the rally shouting that he must be allowed to hand over his”gift”to the vice-president.
Shoving and pushing through the crowd towards the platform, squirrel in hand, the man shouted in the vernacular Shona language: “Regai ndimupe shindi mhani. Regai ndimupe chipo chake,” which loosely translated means,”let me give her the squirrel. Let me hand her the gift”.
Police in Masvingo town refused to comment on the matter insisting they were not aware of the incident. Mujuru later on donated Z$250 million towards the rebuilding of Gokomere High school which was gutted by fire last May. – ZimOnline
