Flowers in Mbare

HARARE - A certain street was completely blocked with refuse, piled high. One day the City Council, at long last, sent a lorry and took it, well, not all, but most of it, away.
Since then the next door neighbours have planted some little shrubs and flowers along that street, as if to say, "We do

not want to see such ugly sights again, we want to see flowers and beautiful things.”
I am glad someone made a beginning. There are still many ugly sights disturbing us in Mbare, many heaps of rubble and rubbish, many wounds of houses razed to the grounds, many helpless people unable to pay their bills. But someone said No to these ugly sights. Thank you.
I reversed my car, not seeing a hole in the ground. My right rear wheel plunged into it. When I got out to see what had happened there were four young men offering to help, “How much do you pay us for the job?” their leader said.
But they did not wait for the answer. In a moment the car was back on the road. Maybe this was the only piece of work these jobless men were able to do in a long day. And the only money they were able to make. – In touch Jesuit Communications
