Mugabe pledges anti-corruption purge

HARARE – The government mouthpiece, The Herald, says President Robert Mugabe has threatened to purge the top ranks of his party in a bid to stamp out corruption. He reportedly told the central committee “growing numbers of people” were “tarnishing the ruling party’s rep

utation by getting wealthy through corrupt means”, and pledged a “campaign of cleansing”.
His comments came amid reports of fierce jockeying for position ahead of his possible retirement in 2008, and the growing ill-health of his first vice president, Joseph Msika.
Mugabe also hit out at what he called violence and brutal behaviour in the main opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), following an attack on a prominent white MDC legislator Trudy Stevenson.
“No party that is dedicated to violence should be allowed to exist in Zimbabwe,” Mugabe told The Herald.
