Police ban 8 MDC rallies

HARARE - Eight MDC rallies were banned last weekend, party spokesman Nelson Chamisa told The Zimbabwean.
Two were scheduled for the Honde and Gandanzara in Manicaland, two for Chivhu and Chikomba in Mashonaland East, one for Gutu North in Masvingo, one for Chinhoyi (Mashonaland West), one for Sek

e and one for Kwe Kwe, which was to have been addressed by Party President, Morgan Tsvangirai.
“Various unconvincing reasons were given for the bannings. But the bottom line is that Zanu (PF) is shivering. They thought we were going to use the rallies around th4 country to announce the dates for the mass protests. They can’t tell what is happening and they don’t like that at all,” said Chamisa.
The government action, through the police, in banning the meetings was tantamount to banning the party, he said.
“You can’t expect a political party to function without contact with its supporters. That is like denying us oxygen.” – Staff reporter
