Bail for CIO killer

CHINHOYI- A local magistrate has granted Z$500 million bail to convicted murderer Frank Utahwarova, a divisional intelligence officer with the CIO (Central Intelligence Organization).
Utahwarova is charged with hijacking a Zambian haulage truck loaded with copper to his farm Mhangura.
He is b

elieved to be part of a syndicate involved in the theft of precious metals and the hijacking of luxury vehicles and has been linked to the murder of former Bindura Nickel Mine CEO, Leonard Chimimba. He was gunned down outside his Harare home and his killers have never been found.
What has raised eyebrows is the intervention of senior CIO officers who have allegedly pressurised the magistrate first of all to hear the case in camera, and then to grant bail, despite the seriousness of the charges against Utahwarova.
Following his conviction in 2003 for the beating to death of an MDC activist in Ruwa, Utahwarova was sentenced to nine years imprisonment. He was mysteriously released after only six days and resumed working for the CIO.- Staff reporter
