Police arrest 20

CHITUNGWIZA - More than 20 people were arrested here on Monday as some 5000 residents demonstrated against the council's decision to hike water charges and rates by more than 1000%.
The residents from St Mary's and Zengeza gathered at Chitungwiza Municipal Council offices where they demanded tha

t the council reverse its decision to hike the charges. They also complained of poor service delivery, which has resulted in garbage piling up in the streets. Sewage pipe bursts have gone for weeks on end unattended, posing a serious health hazard, yet residents are paying huge bills. St Mary’s is one of the poorest suburbs in Chitungwiza, with unemployment at over 80%, residents are finding it difficult to meet water charges and rates averaging Z$15 to 20 million per month.
The residents dispersed peacefully after the police declared that the demonstrations were unlawful under the notorious Public Order and Security Act (POSA).- Own correspondent
