Intswasa story competition winners

Bulawayo teacher Bryony Rheam has won the Intwasa Festival National Short Story Competition with her short story The Reunion, against stiff opposition from entries from experienced and new writers from across Zimbabwe.
In second place was Harare-based Fungai Rufaro Machirori with her story Rain

in July, and Bulawayo’s Diana Charsley was in third place with One Man and his Dog.
The other shortlisted writers selected by the judges as particularly deserving recognition were Philip Chidavaenzi, from Harare, Laura Chiweshe, from Ruwa, and Shirley Tarr from Bulawayo. Philip’s story So Long, Rindai was “a well written, interesting story”. Laura Chiweshe’s To You My Child was described as “Heartrending – excellent potential” and Shirley Tarr’s To Marvel At as “Stunning Craft. This is a seriously talented writer.”
The winners of the Intwasa Youth Short Story competition were also announced at the same event at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe in Bulawayo. Entry for this competition was open to all students at High Schools in Bulawayo. The winner was Tanya Hunt of Girls College, with A Mystery Shall Remain a Mystery, followed by her Girls College colleague Sarhanna Hassin with Shattered Pieces.
In third place was Petra High student Stephanie MacDonald with Time. The judges also recognised the two most promising stories as Fate Has Sealed the Deal, by Siphosenkosi Dube of Gifford High, and Water, by Founders High student Babusi Nyoni. The prizes were awarded by the Provincial Education Director for Bulawayo, Mr Dan Moyo, and the event was chaired by Hillside Teachers College lecturer, Florence Ntabeni-Green.
