Mann Friday rock the beach

LONDON - African rockers Mann Friday came a close second place in the Contiki sponsored Rock the Beach, Battle of the Bands competition in Mykonos Greece. The band, started by Zimbabwean Robbie Burrell, were flown out to Mykonos for a week in the sun along with other finalists, after winning their h

eat in the competition co-sponsored by Walkabout and InLondon magazine.
The band (Robbie, Ryan, Justin and Lior) said they “faced stiff competition” which was made more difficult when they were told they had to do a cover version of the Beach Boys “Californian Girls” in the final. “Whether it was a blessing or a curse is still to be decided,” writes Ryan on the bands MySpace blog, “those tight, high knit harmonies are genius”.
When the band was not engaged in relaxing by the beach or friendly drinking competitions, they were jamming with their fellow competitors. “Everyone used one night of the week to entertain the Contiki resort with a good old fashioned jam. The various styles led to some amazing interpretations of cover classics, and some not so classic. Robbie had to face us all at breakfast the next morning after singing Ice Ice baby complete with the running man motions.”
The competition was won by a Cardiff based band, Zenyth. However Mann Friday was informed by one of the judges, Arno Carstens of Springbok Nude Girls fame, that they came a “very close second”. “We won over the hearts of an awesome bunch of musicians and holiday makers,” said Ryan. He added: “The lads are all rejuvenated as we now work towards the upcoming Mann Friday gigs and finish off some breathtaking new material which even has Lior foaming at the mouth!” – KJW
