Police thrash NCA protestors

HARARE - Police on Monday brutally assaulted several members of the National Constitutional Assembly (NCA) civic group who were demonstrating in Harare against the torture of trade union leaders by the police two weeks ago.
The demonstration by the NCA was the second time within a week that

the civic alliance has taken to the streets to protest the brutal way in which the police suppressed a Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) protests two weeks ago.
About 500 NCA activists appeared to have caught the police unawares as they marched in central Harare for close to an hour before the armed police details descended on them, severely beating the demonstrators, 27 of who appeared to have suffered serious injury.
NCA chairman Lovemore Madhuku, who was leading the lunch-time protest, condemned the conduct of the police.
He said: “This was a peaceful march to register our disappointment with the manner in which the police assaulted the ZCTU leaders.But dispersing our members with baton sticks merely shows that the police are not hearing our concerns. We will continue with the demonstrations until they understand that what they are doing is wrong.”
Police spokesman Wayne Bvudzijena said he was unable to comment because he was still to be briefed on the matter.
Speaking in Cairo, Egypt at the weekend, President Robert Mugabe defended the assault of the ZCTU leaders saying the protesters deserved the beatings because they had defied lawful orders from the police to disperse. – ZimOnline
