CIO confiscate community radios(07-12-06)

GOKWE - Members of the Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ), identified by rural communities in Gokwe District as focal persons for their Radio Communication Project, have had their radios seized by local CIO operatives.
"When teachers explained that their radios were distributed b

y their Union, they were asked to produce membership cards. Having done so, CIO still took away the radios,” reports Sekai Holland, secretary for policy research for the main wing of the MDC.
“The radios are a popular phenomenon in rural life. They provide the latest news, local and international and link these isolated areas with one another, and the rest of the world. Mberengwa was the first district to raise an alarm after the CIO operating from Mataga Police station took away two radios from Thomas Shoko and Mrs Sarudzai Dube,” said Holland. – Staff reporter
