“The economy is being surbotaged”

President Robert Mugabe admitted at the weekend that his country had problems and pledged to address calls by his party to end a deepening economic crisis that has left a quarter of the population facing starvation.
But in an address to close the annual conference of his ruling Zanu (PF) party, Mugabe once again accused the former colonial power Britain and the US government of planning to topple his government over the issue of his seizure of their farms for landless blacks.

Some delegates to the conference had called for more equitable distribution of food, saying civil servants had hijacked the process. Others called on the government to tighten price controls while others expressed concern at widespread corruption and the collapse of parastatals.
Mugabe urged his supporters to be vigilant against whites, which he said, “think they are white and that their colour gives them the distinction to change government in black countries”.

Behind closed doors, Zimbabwe’s controversial land reform programme and the looting of diamonds in Marange dominated talks, as some delegates accused senior party members of grabbing farms and minerals. The savage infighting in the ruling party also came under discussion.
