Zim situ a threat to World Cup – Morgan

CAPE TOWN - Leader of the main wing of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), Morgan Tsvangirai, has fired a broadside at SADC leaders for their lenience in dealing with the intransigent regime of Harare, a scenario he fears will hamper the successful hosting of the 2010 soccer World Cup by So

uth Africa.
Speaking to the Cape Town Business Council on Monday, Tsvangirai bemoaned the failure by regional leaders to close ranks and help end the Zimbabwean crisis, despite the oneness in the region based on historical backgrounds.
“In the SADC region we are fortunate to have a regional framework that recognizes our historical oneness. But critical advances have been hampered by misplaced solidarity among those in our political leadership at the expense of the generality of the people,” he said.
He also spoke at length on the real dangers the hosting of the World Cup in view of the Zimbabwe situation. “You can’t live in peace as long as your neighbourhood is seen to harbour some rough elements. As we prepare to host the World Cup, international attention shall be on southern Africa for the next four years. Unless we put our heads together and sort the Zimbabwe confusion, we shall be asking our guests to ignore the dangers of a rough neighbourhood at their own risk.
“History shall judge us harshly if we allow our own internal problems to soil the World Cup with, as expected, haphazard migration across our boarders, doubts over the political legitimacy of the Mugabe regime, lack of political space, a flawed constitution, starvation, insecurity and bad governance.” – Own correspondent
