BREAKING NEWS: Arrests – 17-02-07)

HARARE
Police have arrested about six Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) officials following demonstrations yesterday afternoon by members of the Morgan Tsvangirai-led wing, combined with ZINASU and NCA members during which police details were beaten up.
MDC secre

tary general, Tendai Biti told The Zimbabwean on Saturday morning that a number of their senior officials that include MPs Paul Madzore and Willas Madzimure as well as senior official Last Maengahama had been arrested.

“A number of them have been arrested but it has been difficult to know the real situation because police are using the usual tactics of not coming out in the open about who is in and where exactly,” Biti said. “I am aware that Madzore and Maengahama were arrested yesterday and that about six of our officials were picked up.

Efforts to verify the arrests at Harare Central Police Station were unsuccessful, with sources there suggesting the MDC officials could have been taken to Matapi Police Station in Mbare, usually used to torture people in police custody and whose conditions are among the worst.

Officer Commanding Harare Province, Bothwell Mugariri yesterday said police were on high alert in the capital, adding those on leave were likely to be called for duty to contain a situation of swelling tension as opposition forces heighten their anti-Mugabe crusades.

The demonstrations on Friday came after successful marches organised by the Women (and Men) of Zimbabwe Arise carried out on Tuesday.
