Dates set for teachers’ strike(01-02-07)

HARARE - The National Executive Committee of the Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ) has been mandated by teachers in Zimbabwe to organise industrial action this week to press for better salaries and working conditions.
Teachers are demanding a Minimum basic salary (First Quarter 20

07) of Z$400,000, a transport allowance of $100,000 and housing allowance of $150,000.
The organisers said teachers would embark on a go-slow from Wednesday to Friday this week while they extend an olive branch to the government to engage them.
“If government snubs our magnanimous gesture a full throttle strike shall commence on the 5th of February 2007,” said a statement.
PTUZ called on teachers to remain focused on the struggle. “We must never allow petty differences between Teachers’ Organisations to take precedence at a time when we need each other most. Never buy into the agenda of political parties,” it said.
