Inflation hits new high-(15-02-07)

HARARE - Zimbabwe's annual inflation raced to a new record in January of 1 593,%, inflicting more pain on workers in a country as government fail to find a lasting solution to the country's political tensions and economic crisis. The figure is a 312,5 percentage increase from December's figure

of 1 281,1%.
The Central Statistical Office said on a monthly basis inflation rose to 45,4% compared to 36,3% in December.
The statistics will come as a crushing blow to the Reserve Bank Governor Dr Gideon Gono who unveiled his new monetary policy for the first quarter of the year last week recently hit by wildcat strikes against an economic crisis stoking political tensions.
The government has forecast inflation, which it has branded the country’s chief enemy, to retreat to 350-400 percent by the end of this year. But others, including the International Monetary Fund, expect it to accelerate further to 4 096% by December this year.
