US$2 million needed for games(08-02-07)

HARARE - Zimbabwe requires about US$2 million to be able to send a team to the Ninth All Africa Games set for Algeria later this year, an amount, which the Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) hopes to raise from well wishers.
Sources have told this paper that the SRC has submitted its request

to the over-burdened government of President Robert Mugabe for assistance but already been advised to try other options.
“They (SRC) needs a lot of money, about US$2 million,” a source in the ministry of sports said. “They submitted their request and have already been advised to look for donations to cover the deficit.”
SRC director general Charles Nhemachena, who had not responded to questions regarding the amount and efforts made so far in raising the money, recently announced that selection and training preparations were already underway for the October Games.
Zimbabwe’s participation in international sporting events has been affected by the persisting economic crisis under the Mugabe regime and results have been deteriorating by each passing year. – Own correspondent
