Chibebe Court case Outcome (23-06-07)

The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions Secretary General, Cde Wellington Chibebe appeared at the Mbare Magistrates Court thi

s morning in a case where he is accused of allegedly beating up a policeman at a roadblock.



Cde Chibebe’s defense counsel Alec Muchadehama successfully applied that he be removed from remand. The State will proceed by way of summons pending a Supreme Court hearing. Cde Chibebe is challenging some sections of the Criminal Law and Codification and Reform Act Chapter 9.23 under which he was being charged and the matter is still to be heard at the Supreme Court.


Meanwhile, The Worker newspaper News Editor Bright Chibvuri also appeared in Court this week in a case where he is being accused of practising without accreditation. The matter has once again been postponed to July 19 2007. Chibvuri was arrested in March in the boarder town of Plumtree where he was attending a Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions organized workshop. He was in no way at the workshop in his capacity as a Journalist, but had attended as a ZCTU staffer.


The three ZCTU activists arrested just before the April 3 and 4 2007 Stay away for distributing flyers have also appeared in Court this week. They have been remanded to July 12 2007 as their case has been referred to the Attorney’s General office.
