Concern over child trafficking in Zim (21-06-07)

BULAWAYO
Zimbabwe has failed to introduce laws to halt rising child trafficking in the country, the United Nations Children's Fund said yesterday.

UNICEF expressed concern over the failure by the Zimbabwe government to ratify the United Nations Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and P

unish Trafficking in Persons and the absence of a law to deal with child trafficking.

The UN agency said this to mark the Day of the African Child, commemorated on June 16 to mark the day in 1976 when thousands of black children in Soweto rose against poor quality education and demanded that they be taught in their local language.

UNICEF noted an increase in child trafficking in Zimbabwe and the region with more than 1000 children among the 3000 Zimbabweans deported from with South Africa and Botswana.

UNICEF said sustained poverty in Zimbabwe was central to child trafficking, with traffickers taking advantage of the aspirations of the estimated eight million children orphaned by AIDS and those living in abject poverty. – CAJ News
