Detention Watch from Zimbabwe Association (21-06-07)

LONDON
Many asylum seekers are puzzled and confused about fresh claims, and how to make them. It is hard to know what the difference is between a fresh claim and fresh representations etc. ILPA has produced a good briefing note on this topic which is available from the ZA office.

Tho

se of you round the country having difficulties accessing legal representation may be cheered to learn that branches of the Refugee Legal Centre (RLC) are now operating in Bedford, Birmingham, Croydon, Dover, Hastings (from June), Ipswich, Leeds, Nottingham, Portsmouth and West London. RLC Portsmouth has just started detention advice surgeries at Haslar on Tuesdays and Fridays. If you’re stuck there and want to see RLC please approach Ward Gwillam, Welfare officer at the prison.

Disappointing recent news is the intention of the Home Office to expand the NSA (Non-Suspensive Appeal) list to include Malawi and nine other countries. This means that an asylum seeker who has travelled on a Malawi passport and is refused by the Home Office will have no right of appeal in the UK, ie. Their claim will not be heard by an independent immigration judge. If you disgree with the expansion of the NSA list please write to your MP, giving him/her the reasons you believe Malawi should not be added to the NSA list. Ask your MP to intervene and attempt to ensure the NSA list expansion is not approved.

All ZA members should have received a copy of our bright yellow summer newsletter recently … anyone who was disappointed not to receive one needs to check with the ZA office to see if we have your correct current address and whether you’re up to date with your membership subs.
