Econet increases charges (20-06-07)

 ECONET Wireless Zimbabwe has increased phone charges by more than 500%, a move likely to come as a blow to thousands of users who are already reeling under harsh economic conditions that are eroding their income.
In a statement seen by The Zimbabwean, Econet announced that as from Frida


y local calls will go up from an average of $700 per minute to $5 500 per minute.
An Short Message Servie (SMS) charge will now be $1 540 up from about $300.
Another service provider Telecel that is partly owned by Mubage’s nephew Leo has also increased its charged with a local call going as much as $8 000 per minute depending on its destination.
The latest increase also came at a time when some of the service providers are struggling to offer competitive services to their customers.
It has become difficult for local mobile users in Zimbabwe to phone international calls.
Service operators cite the shortage of foreign currency as the hindering factor as they are supposed to pay in forex to the service provider where of the call’s destination.
Zimbabwe has been facing the shortage of foreign currency since President Mugabe’s policies conflicted with those of western powers.
