FRANCISTOWN
As Zimbabweans jostle to make quick buck selling diamonds illegally, the Diamond and Narcotics Squad here has been hit by a spate of cases involving diamonds smuggled from Zimbabwe.
The latest diamond smuggler to be prosecuted was Edward Sachinda, a Zimbabwean man who was fi

ned P1,200 or six months imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to illegal possession of diamonds.
Assistant Superintendent Boikhutso Ntalabgwe of the Francistown Diamond and Narcotics Squad told the press that most Botswana nationals arrested for illegal possession of diamonds pointed to Zimbabwe as the origin of the precious stones.
“Before 2006 we would investigate one or two cases in a year and all diamonds involved were stolen locally. But since 2006 there has been a rise in the illegally imported diamonds from Zimbabwe, which make their way into the local diamond black market. We handle at least one case a month,” he said.
Two months ago, Jane Baeti, a 46-year-old of Masingwaneng was sentenced to 18 months imprisonment with nine months suspended for three years after being convicted of unlawful possession of uncut precious stones. – CAJ News
