THE Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has shocked even its most critics by lifting the ban on rallies, political gatherings as well as demonstrations in Harare, in a move observers feel is meant to entice the opposition Movement for Democratic Chang

e (MDC) to come to the negotiating table with the ruling party.

Others believe that the Mugabe regime is only going to apply such cosmetic measures ahead of the AU/EU summit set for Portugal in order to appear like seceding on political repression.

ZRP Inspectors manning Harare districts, Isaac Tayengwa and Thomsen Jangara wrote to the MDC on Wednesday advising the party that “the ban has been lifted with immediate effect” but didn’t provide more explanations.

MDC secretary general, Tendai Biti said they were still analysing the situation before they could
comment on the matter with indications coming from the opposition party that it suspected a plot by government that is not sincere to be behind the move.

This comes barely a week after the ZRP last week issued the MDC with a notice of extension of the ban on political gatherings in Harare by another week, much to the chagrin of the opposition party, which lambasted it as merely a way of giving an unfair advantage to the ruling Zanu (PF) party.

The ban on rallies and demonstrations has been discriminately applied by police since it was introduced in March, with Zanu (PF) supporters and other pressure groups aligned to the ruling party being left to enjoy all the freedom to hold their activities in the designated areas.

Zimbabwe is crawling towards a watershed poll of combined presidential and general elections set for next year, albeit amidst unprecedented economic meltdown under the supervision of the Mugabe regime.

President Robert Mugabe has defied the odds and all calls for him to step down both from within his party as well as generally across the whole political spectrum-CAJ News.
