HARARE:
A UNIVERSITY of Zimbabwe student was allegedly murdered on 25 July by unknown assailants in a cold blooded attack along Airport road near Hatfield in Harare.
ZINASU coordinator, Washington Katema, on Tuesday (yesterday) told CAJ News that Tafirenyika Magwidi, a second year social sc

ience student was killed while walking from town after failing to secure transport to his temporary base in the suburb.

“They were four of them walking from town to Hatfield when they were attacked. Magwidi died on the spot while two other people who were with him died at hospital the following day. The survivor is reported to be in a critical condition in the intensive care unit (ICU) in a state of a comma,” said Katema.

Magwidi was coming from writing examinations at campus in Mount Pleasant and fell prey to the assailants at a dark spot at the intersectrion of Airport road and George road.

Director of the Youth Initiative for Democracy in Zimbabwe (YADEZ) Sydney Chisi yesterday said Mugwidi’s death was a clear indication of the “authorities’ heartlessness”.

“This is a clear indication of how the whole education system has collapsed. He (Mugwidi) died because He died because he could not get transport home. It is very unfortunate and sad,” said Chisi.

UZ students are currently facing accommodation problems after they were evicted out of the campus residence on 9 July by the Vice Chancellor of the University of Zimbabwe, Professor Levy Nyagura, university authorities and riot police.

The country is also faced with a critical shortage of transport due fuel shortages and this might have forced students to brave the night and foot home-CAJ News.
