Workers down tools (28-06-07)

MUTARE
More than 2 000 city council workers on Monday downed tools in protest against low salaries in the Eastern border city, crippling service delivery in the already overstretched local authority.
The workers gathered in the morning at the city's Queens Hall and demanded that t

hey be addressed by the commissioners running the affairs of the city.
Worker representatives had marathon meeting with the city’s town clerk, Cardwell Munjoma and the chairperson of the commission, Fungai Chaeruka and his deputy Irene Zindi.
The workers are demanding among other things a salary of Z$9m up from a mere Z$260 000 a month a regular council employee is getting.
“We have to resolve this and return to work,” said the acting town clerk, to jeers from the workers who looked resolute not to return to work until they are assured of a pay rise in writing.
Journalists were ordered out of the meeting. Residents milled around as no-one was being served.
“I hope the council will not cut off my water services and supplementary charges for none payment as they are not working,” fumed a resident at the closed council offices. – CAJ News
