ZESA begs govt for funds

HARARE
The Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA) has written to government requesting it to provide funds as a matter of urgency in the wake of a total blackout likely to hit the country before the end of this month.
The Zimbabwean has established that the power utility, saddled by

a huge budget deficit and unsettled debts to international suppliers, has reached a dead end of a situation it has tried to sustain for a couple of months, of surviving on very little power supplies and begging from international suppliers for more credit lines.
ZESA board chairman, Christopher Chetsanga confirmed that the power utility was in dire straits and requested government to address the situation. “The situation is increasingly getting difficult and we are hoping government could provide funds to address the situation,” he said.
Chetsanga wouldn’t engage in discussing details but senior officials at the power utility said that ZESA owes in excess of US300 million to suppliers in Mozambique, Zambia, South Africa and the Democratic Republic of Congo, who are reported to have given final warnings and most of them as having already switched off Zimbabwe.
